Jumping stilts were new when I was a kid, and at first I could not get the hang of them. Not for lack of trying. I was out there almost every day, I must have rugged up the grass in the yard pretty good. Jumping, falling, toppling – never getting it right. So after a while, I almost gave up. But then, there is the guy across the fence, the neigbors kid. You know how you sometimes get whey you are a kid, you really worship someone. And here I was at six, and he was twelve. And had a pair of jumping stilts, too. Maybe that is why I got mine.

Maybe I nagged my parents to give them to me until finally they relented. It was not even Christmas, and they were not that generous with presents. But certainly that was why I practiced, and practiced, and finally got the hang of it. So one day, I jumped on the stilts, and it all clicked. I was jumping faster than I could walk, I finally had more than two legs. I started jumping down the street.

The guy next door sees me. Yes, he always thought I was a dork. But this time, he falls over. Pratfalls, off his stilts – right into his mothers beloved roses. I jumped on down the street. That was when I started enjoying my jumping stilts.

The best part of my fourth grade schooling in elementary school was square dancing on stilts. Our teachers had crafted the stilts for her students, since she was also known to make birdhouses as gifts. However, I remember her allowing us to practiced for sever months before she finally introduced the music. Having already learned how to square dance in first grade, I pretty much had the standard songs engraved in my memory. The difficult part became the fun through careful call outs of our teacher.

Each and every student seemed to enjoy him/herself and looked forward to dancing every Friday, but there was one student that would lose her balance and was unable to even stand on the stilts without falling. Still, she sat and watched and enjoyed herself just the same. As a group of young students, we were told that she had vision and ear disabilities, but the following year she was able to join us. Lastly, we were also awarded for our abilities. Very quickly it was known who had an exceptional talent at dancing. These kids that stood out were able to stand and walk with the stilts by supporting each other in their dance. These two kids also excelled in jump rope, so perhaps they were simply natural born athletes, and they won the awards all the times.
